Träume und alles, was mit ihnen zusammenhängt, haben Schopenhauer von Jugend an immer beschäftigt. Seine “Traumdeutung” bereitete der Psychoanalyse Sigmund Freuds den Weg. Träume suspendieren die Realität der faktischen Welt, die als Welt der Vorstellung dem Satz vom Grund unterliegt. Der Begriff der Vorstellung weist in verschiedenen Aspekten eine Analogie zum Begriff der Virtualität auf, was an die Philosophie des absoluten Virtualismus des Zeitgenossen Friedrich Bouterwek erinnert. Da da die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung ein “Erwachen” aus der Welt der (...) Vorstellung ankündigt, führt eine Analyse am Leitfaden des Traumbegriffs auf die verschiedenen Dimensionen des Träumens selbst, deren Darstellung die Bücher 2, 3 und 4 des Hauptwerks gewidmet sind. Das bereits in der Dissertation 1813 in Aussicht gestellte Erwachen erweist sich als ein differenzierter Prozess, der auf ein anderes Verhältnis zur Welt hinausläuft, das als Erlösung oder Befreiung verstanden werden kann. Arthur Schopenhauer verband das transzendentalphilosophische Erbe Kants gezielt mit phänomenologischen, existenzphilosophischen und hermeneutischen Elementen. Das hob ihn bereits von zeitgenössischen Philosophen ab, macht ihn aber gleichzeitig interessant für philosophische Strömungen, die ebenfalls bestrebt sind, Philosophie neu zu denken. Dieser Einfluss Schopenhauers auf die spätere Phänomenologie, Existenzphilosophie und Hermeneutik ist bisher ein Desiderat der Forschung. Der Band nimmt die Arbeit an dieser wichtigen Rezeptions- und Wirkungsgeschichte Schopenhauers auf und wirft einen neuen Blick auf seine Philosophie.

Looking for goal-relevant objects in our various environments is one of the most ubiquitous tasks the human visual system has to accomplish. Visual search is guided by a number of separable selective-attention mechanisms that can be categorized as bottom-up driven – guidance by salient physical properties of the current stimuli – or top-down controlled – guidance by observers' “online” knowledge of search-critical object properties. In addition, observers' expectations based on past experience also play also a significant role in goal-directed visual (...) selection. Because sensory environments are typically stable, it is beneficial for the visual system to extract and learn the environmental regularities that are predictive of the target stimulus. This perspective article is concerned with one of these predictive mechanisms: statistical context learning of consistent spatial patterns of target and distractor items in visual search. We review recent studies on context learning and its adaptability to incorporate consistent changes, with the aim to provide new directions to the study of processes involved in the acquisition of search-guiding context memories and their adaptation to consistent contextual changes – from a three-pronged, psychological, computational, and neurobiological perspective. Schopenhauers handschriftlicher Nachlass im weiteren Sinne umfasst alle von ihm stammenden aber zu seinen Lebzeiten nicht im Druck veröffentlichten Aufzeichnungen und Dokumente jeglicher Art aus all seinen Lebensphasen. Im üblichen und engeren Sinne beschränkt sich die Bezeichnung ›Schopenhauers handschriftlicher Nachlass‹ meist auf die Manuskripte mit philosophischen bzw. wissenschaftlichen Themen. Reisetagebücher, Briefe sowie geschäftliche, amtliche, biographische und ähnliche Dokumente wurden in der Regel getrennt behandelt, ausgewertet und veröffentlicht. Sie geben allerdings oft wichtige Auskünfte über die Entstehungsgeschichte der Schopenhauerschen Philosophie.

By studying several cases of expert systems' use, a variety of difficulties were identified as directly depending on specific characteristics of experts and their tasks. This concerns more than the questions: “May experts be replaced by machines?” or “Is experts' knowledge explicable?”. The organisational structure of their work as well as the cyclic, non-plannable way of their task performing have further relevance. The paper introduces the concept of experts' systems to deal with diversities of their expertise and complexities of their (...) work. It draws a distinction between non-monotonic problem solving, exploration, medium and modification, and argues that these modes are not reducible to yet another improved input/output strategy or dialogue style but introduce additional functions supporting the human-computer interaction according to experts' needs. In the first few sections, the paper covers the theoretical and empirical results of our research, whereas Section 4 introduces our design suggestions for experts' systems. (shrink)

Sound can be listened to in various ways and with different intentions. Multiple factors influence how and what we perceive when listening to sound. Sonification, the acoustic representation of data, is in essence just sound. It functions as sonification only if we make sure to listen attentively in order to access the abstract information it contains. This is difficult to accomplish since sound always calls the listener’s attention to concrete—whether natural or musical—points of references. Important aspects determining how we listen (...) to sonification are discussed in this paper: elicited sounds, repeated sounds, conceptual sounds, technologically mediated sounds, melodic sounds, familiar sounds, multimodal sounds and vocal sounds. We discuss how these aspects help the listener engage with the sound, but also how they can become points of reference in and of themselves. The various sonic qualities employed in sonification can potentially open but also risk closing doors to the accessibility and perceptibility of the sonified data. (shrink)

Spatial region concepts such as “front,” “back,” “left,” and “right” reflect our typical interaction with space, and the corresponding surrounding regions have different statuses in memory. We examined the representation of spatial directions in the auditory space, specifically in how far natural response actions, such as orientation movements toward a sound source, would affect the categorization of egocentric auditory space. While standing in the middle of a circle with 16 loudspeakers, participants were presented acoustic stimuli coming from the loudspeakers in (...) randomized order, and verbally described their directions by using the concept labels “front,” “back,” “left,” “right,” “front-right,” “front-left,” “back-right,” and “back-left.” Response actions varied in three blocked conditions: (1) facing front, (2) turning the head and upper body to face the stimulus, and (3) turning the head and upper body plus pointing with the hand and outstretched arm toward the stimulus. In addition to a protocol of the verbal utterances, motion capture and video recording generated a detailed corpus for subsequent analysis of the participants’ behavior. Chi-square tests revealed an effect of response condition for directions within the left and right sides. We conclude that movement-based response actions influence the representation of auditory space, especially within the sides’ regions. Moreover, the representation of auditory space favors the front and the back regions in terms of resolution, which is possibly related to the physiological characteristics of the human auditory system, as well as to the ecological requirements of action control in the different regions. Dazu gehören Schweppenhäusers Frankfurter Dissertation über Heideggers Theorie der Sprache; ein berühmter, lange nicht mehr erhältlicher Lexikonartikel zur Sprachphilosophie; kürzere Abhandlungen zum Sprachbegriff bei Benjamin, Adorno und Horkheimer; Aufsätze zu ästhetischen Themen sowie Essays über Johann Gottfried Seume, Friedrich Maximilian Klinger, Hermann Hesse, Stefan George und Botho Strauß. Außerdem wird hier (...) erstmals eine Arbeit über Sprachsoziologie veröffentlicht, die ursprünglich für die Soziologischen Exkurse des Instituts für Sozialforschung in Frankfurt geschrieben worden war, dann aber nicht in den 1956 erschienenen Band aufgenommen wurde.
